     Singlemode adapters come with white (FC) and blue (SC) caps; 

     Multi mode adapters  come with black (FC) and beige (SC) caps     FC, SC, ST adapters are inline (i.e. fiber optic connectors are installed at both ends) 

     and they are used for the precise centering of connectors' ferrules in special sleeves
